Essential Bobtail Care

Considering a Bobtail? Here are three essential things to know:

  • Health: Due to the unique genetics that cause taillessness, some Manx cats may be prone to certain spinal or skeletal health issues collectively called "Manx Syndrome," which can affect mobility and bowel or bladder function. Responsible breeding minimizes these problems.

  • Care: Manx cats have a double coat requiring regular grooming, especially the longer-haired Cymric variant. They tend to have a hearty appetite and can become overweight, so diet control is important.

  • Environment: They need plenty of social interaction, from people and even other pets. Ensure regular simulation to prevent boredom. They are energetic and intelligent cats.

Unraveling the Myths

Manx cats are surrounded by colorful myths and legends. One popular tale is the Noah's Ark legend, where the cat's tail was severed by the closing door. Other myths include Viking warriors using cat tails as lucky charms and the whimsical idea of a "cabbit"—a hybrid of a cat and a rabbit. These stories add to the breed's unique charm and whimsical nature.

Excellent Mousers

Historically and currently, Manx cats are excellent hunters and were used on farms and ships to control rodent populations, making them practical working cats. Our cats hunt mice, vole, muskrats and keeps all other unwanted critters away.
